The fourth Academy Games was held in Armidale NSW from
Friday 17 to Sunday 19 April 2009.

Over seven hundred athletes, coaches, managers and support staff arrived in Armidale for seven different sporting competitions . Hundreds more parents and family  followed them, giving the local area a temporary boost of over one thousand residents.

The Academy Games is an iniative of the Academies of Sport Incorporated (ASi). ASi is made up of member bodies from the NSW Regional Academy Network

                    
                        Day one action on the Golf Course

 

This website has been especially prepared for the Games, and all information, including details of all athletes who are competing, can now be found on this site. 

In addition, all scores and results for each Sport will be received hourly and will be published on the respective results page providing the most up to date information available. 

Day 1.

All seven sports got under way and finished mid afternoon to allow the athletes to participate in the Official Opening Ceremony at Boolimimbah House on the lawns of the University of New England.

The Chairman of Academies of Sports Inc., Mr Ian Robilliard addressed the large gathering of VIPs, athletes, coaches, managers and parents saying:

"Events such as these build character, test our skill base and provide a medium for team building. Respect and responsibilty are an important part of the Academy games where citizenship through sport is gained. Good luck to all the athletes during the Games. Play well and play fair and meet some lifelong friends."

High lights of the first day were NIAS boy's BASKETBALL team winning their first two matches, Chris Curran from HAS shooting a nett 66 in the GOLF competition and IAS girl's HOCKEY team winning their two matches.

In the NETBALL competition CCAS started well with three wins out of three matches whilst in RUGBY UNION, NIAS and NCAS each had a win and a draw. SOFTBALL was highlighted by SWSAS having three wins out of three matches. No score were available from LAWN BOWLS at the time of close of play.

Day 2.

Another sunny day with all competitons getting away early. Highlights of the day included CCAS being undefeated in the BASKETBALL boy's competition and SERAS youngster Thomas Jones shooting a nett 63 in the GOLF competition. IAS girl's HOCKEY team has four wins to date in a very even competition.

In the NETBALL competition WRAS and CCAS lead the way with five wins out of six matches played. NIAS and NCAS are battling out the RUGBY UNION competition with three wins and a draw each, the draw being when they played each other! SWSAS continue to dominate in the SOFTBALL competition being undefeated to date.

Day 3.

Decision Day! Today all competitions were finalised and the winners were congratulated, and losers were complimented on their committment over three days of hectic competition. To all athletes, coaches and managers, we thank you for your efforts throught the three tiring days of competition.

Tournament highlights must be led by the outstsnding performances of both the Central Coast Academy of Sport's boy's and girl's teams who each won their prospective divisions of the BASKETBALL competition and South West Sydney Academy of Sport who were undefeated in the NETBALL competition.

North Coast Academy of Sport were 27-0 winners in the final of the RUGBY UNION competition over Western Sydney Academy of Sport and South West Sydney Academy of Sport were victorious in the SOFTBALL tournament.

Ben Wilkie of South East Region Academy of Sport was the individual nett winner of the GOLF competiton. In the 36 hole Scratch Event Ryan Smith from Western Sydney Academy of Sport was the winner on a countback from Harrison Russell from Northern Inland Academy of Sport, with both carding 148.

No final placings were available from the LAWN BOWLS and HOCKEY  competitions

Northern Inland Academy of Sport was selected as the host for the next three Regional Academy Games. We hope everybody who ventured to Armidale to participate in the fourth Regional Academy Games will enjoy the sporting competitions and social events organised over the three days.
